The most valuable insights we gain from the MSS survey go beyond simply identifying how many young people face challenges or engage in risky behaviors. The key information helps us understand what truly works in supporting students as they navigate this crucial stage of their lives, focusing on protective factors that guide them away from harmful choices.

Survey Questions

The survey asks students about their activities, opinions, behaviors and experiences. Students respond to questions on school climate, bullying, out-of-school activities, healthy behaviors (e.g., nutrition and physical activity), emotional health, substance use, and connections with school and family. Data Quality

To maintain the highest possible quality, the MSS data are put through a number of checks to search for non-valid answers. These checks may result in the deletion of a case entirely from the data set, or the deletion of the answers to certain questions in a case that is otherwise retained. Learn more about data quality.
