MSS 2025

Registration for the Survey

The MSS will be administered in January - June 2025. Registration information will be sent to district assessment coordinators in December 2024.
At the beginning of the school year, the Minnesota Department of Education emails superintendents, principals, and DACs with information about the survey and how to register their schools for that year’s administration of the MSS. Schools are directed to an online registration system where they indicate the grades they wish to survey at that school, what date they plan to administer it, and the number of students per grade they expect to take the survey. Registered schools are sent instructions for administering the survey. MDE staff, local public health, and others that depend on the MSS data follow-up with non-registered schools to encourage them to participate.  Schools have until a week before the end of the fielding period to register.   

Administration of the Survey

The MSS data collection begins in January and will end in June 2025. Schools and districts choose which date to administer the survey during this period. Some schools encourage students who were absent on the school’s administration date to take the survey later. 

Timeline for the 2025 MSS
  • July 2024: MSS Interagency Team reviews survey items for the 2025 survey. MDE begins developing the MSS registration system and online survey.
  • August 2024: The Minnesota Department of Education notifies superintendents and district assessment coordinators about the 2025 MSS and their obligations under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment.
  • Fall 2024: Promotion of the 2025 MSS begins.
  • December 2024: Copies of the 2025 survey instruments and sample notification letters (in English, Spanish, Hmong and Somali) are provided to districts.
  • December 2024: Registration opens for schools to sign-up for the 2025 MSS.
  • January-June 2025: Schools administer the survey on any date(s) during this window. Schools must provide parents and guardians the opportunity to opt their child out of the MSS at least two weeks prior to conducting the survey.
  • May 2025: Schools who complete data collection in early March receive an executive summary of findings.
